The topic of this thesis is elaboration of character typology and their characterization in the literary work „Tales of Long Ago“ by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. By its theme „Tales of Long Ago“ belong to the artistic fairy tale in which real and unreal events and the conflict of good and bad are intertwined. The characters are those who are the bearers of certain characteristics, they start the action and suggest the conceptual layer of the stories. By the literary-theoretical interpretation of the characters a few typologies are determined based on a relation of real and fantastic, human and animalistic, good and bad and gender and age criteria. According to this, the characters in „Tales of Long Ago“ could be observed as: real and fantastic, animal characters in relation to human characters, male characters in relation to female characters, adults to children, good versus evil and it is even possible to recognize the waverers. The diverse character typology presume a recognition of different functions that characters get in a particular fairy tale. It is established by analysis that the characters of „Tales of Long Ago“ are diverse, some are typified while a great number of characters is exceptionally psychologically nuanced and very complex considering the genre of a fairy tale. The ethical value system, whose bearers are literary heroes, promotes the author's ethics of heart and preservation of traditional Christian, but also general human, universal values like family, home, humility, modesty, dedication, perseverance and faith.
