Abstract
Translation is and always has been a demanding process due to the fact that numerous factors affect it. One of those factors is culture and its importance has been recognized in the past few decades. This thesis was concerned with what culture means in translation and which changes it has brought to it. The aim of the thesis was to analyse problems which appear in the process of translation and are related to culture and those problems were analysed on the example of the novel Hotel Zagorje. The thesis confirmed that translating cultural elements indeed poses a problem that has to be considered from various points of view since cultural elements carry meanings which have to be interpreted correctly in order to be translated in the same way. Moreover, the case study which was carried out confirmed that the translated version is authentic and adequately transfers the message of the original novel.
Abstract (croatian)
Prevođenje se oduvijek smatralo zahtjevnim procesom iz razloga što su na njega oduvijek utjecali, i još uvijek utječu, mnogi vanjski faktori. Jedan od tih faktora je i kultura i njena je važnost u prevođenju prepoznata prije nekoliko desetljeća. Ovaj diplomski rad bavio se upravo problemima koji se pojavljuju tijekom prevođenja, a povezani su s kulturom, a cilj rada bio je analizirati te probleme na primjeru romana Hotel Zagorje. Rad je potvrdio tezu kako prevođenje kulturnih elemenata predstavlja problem za svakog prevoditelja i taj se problem mora sagledati iz nekoliko perspektiva kako bi se kulturni elementi pravilno interpretirali i jednako tako i preveli. Provedeno istraživanje pokazalo je da je prevedena verzija romana vjerodostojna verzija originala i da je uspjela prenijeti bitne poruke koje original sadrži.
