With the increase of globalization, migration, travelling, tourism, the Internet and social media, multilingualism and multiculturality can be increasingly observed in Pula as well as all around the world. When communicating online as opposed to face-to-face, the language choices and varieties of Pula’s youths might prove to be different. This study aims to investigate how young multilingual people from Pula communicate online as opposed to in real life. The communication of young multilingual people from Pula on various social media sites and/or messaging applications such as Instagram and WhatsApp could provide more information on language choice and preference when it comes to online discourse versus face-to-face communication. These applications have been selected because they are popular among the younger generations and all users are allowed and can choose to comment in any language they please, therefore the study might prove to be a useful source of data for further research in multilingual practices in Pula and Istria. The obtained results will then be analyzed through comparison with previous research on the multilingual practices of users on various social media platforms (Lee, 2016), and a few other which should help determine whether online communication differs from real-life communication in terms of languages used, codeswitching, language choice, language preference, etc. among the young people of Pula.
