This final paper deals with the novel Bijeg with the subtitle “Povijest jednog našeg čovjeka” within the framework of the modernist novel and the classification of novel of character. Milutin Cihlar Nehajev published this novel in the second phase of his writing, the most fruitful one in which he deals with the fate of individuals who experience identity crises throughout their lives and run away from responsibility. The paper describes the literary situation in Croatian modernism and singles out the same modernist characteristics recognizable in the novel Bijeg. Since that time implies the disintegration of realism, the procedures by which Nehajev achieves s break with tradition and opposes realism are presented. Analepsis, inner monologue, stream of consciousness, diary and letter provide the reader with an uninterrupted flow of the main character's thoughts and impressions, and through them one can learn about the character's psychological and emotional state. These actions are constant in the novel, through them we learn about events and characters, and the knowledge that everything happens just as it should, in order to further outline the sensitive nature of Đuro Andrijašević, makes this work a typical novel of character. The main part of the work talks about Đura's attitude towards education, society and women. The syncretism of his appearance does not allow him to realize himself as an educated man even though he has all the predispositions for it, his lack of will to live and to take responsibility prevents him from accomplishing himself in the field of love. Entering life with exaggerated expectations and the inability to fit into the social world of that time, to live the way ordinary people live and to accept petty bourgeois society do not allow the character to survive as a its member. Finally, his egoism, passivity, constant escapism and decision to surrender to life led him to the tragic end.
