The sorrows of jung Wether is one of the most important literature works written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published in 1774. Because of the theme of eternal conflict between reason and emotion, this book has become one of the most influential works in world literature. It apperas in the time of Enlightenment, when life issues are being observed through a pragmatic point of view and when the highest principle is that of the mind. Emotionality is restricted and thought to be unnecessary in this time of age. Goethe writtes his novel influenced by the spirit of that time, it will open the door to emotionalism and make a shift in the current way of thinking. With his Werther he will anticipate the coming of an new era called Storm and stress, as well as Romaticism, which will suddenly change the value system of that time. Emotions will overtake the place that was once reserved only for the primat of reason, sentimentality and a romantic point of view will now stand in the center.The battle between reason amd emotion will be shown through several examples of critics which will defend their point of view regarding Goethes work in a positive or negative maner and will so show different ways of resolwing this conflict. Starting from the time the work has been published and up to the present time, it is clear that Goethe wrote about an eternal theme, which hasn't lost its value or importance even until the present time.
