This graduate thesis explores the fundamental determinants of the conversational style in the function of characterization of characters, apropros, the analysis of using the elements of the conversational style in the service of characterization of literary characters on examples of works from Croatian literature. The paper represents a literary theoretical approach to a character in a semiological concept, describes the characterization of the character for each type of characterization. Furthermore, Croatian literature has been contextualized in the postmodern literature and the elements of the conversational style in the works of Croatian literature are presented. The use of elements of conversational style in literature is shown in literary opuses: You get it, my old (croat. Kužiš, stari moj) by Zvonimir Majdak, Smogovci by Hrvoje Hitrec, The Box of Stamps (Kutija šibica) by Vjekoslav Boban and the Play of Hamlet in the village of Mrduša Donja (croat. Predstava Hamleta u selu Mrduša Donja) by Ivo Brešan. The analysis was carried out honoring the cronological order of the origin of literary opuses. The main aim of the research was to analyze literary characters through elements of a conversational style that includes numerous colloquialisms, vulgarisms, barbarisms and jargonisms. The conversational style is based on spontaneity, unpreparedness, emotionality, and can contribute to characterizing the characters in order to better evoke them to readers. We can conclude by saying that elements of the conversational style are incorporated in such a way that literary characters are characterized as ordinary people with ordinary everyday human behavior and destiny, which allowed the writers to enter deeper into the world of their literary works.
