In thesis „Autobiography in prose Silk, scissors and Silk gone, scissors remained by Irena Vrkljan“ the genre definition of the work is being problematized. Since critics often refer to the term autobiography prose, the attempt was to find and show examples of autobiographical elements. The identity of the subject Irena, the storyteller and the author Irena Vrkljan is a paradigmatic example of an autobiographical pact recognized and „signed“ by the reader and the subject reusing the same motives (silk, scissors) and themes (childhood, youth and maturity) is a characteristic of the autobiographical genre. The category of space (inner space of childhood and the external space of bedroom and kitchen) and the category of time are both interactive and create an effect of localization of intimacy thus confirming the characteristic of autobiography which aspires to reduce time into space. The works in question also problematize the quest of the autobiographical subject for her own identity and spiritual, intelectual and artistic maturity. Irena Vrkljan occasionaly uses the topic and rethoric of female writing style refering to the position of women in a patriarchal society, social norms of burgeois, specificaly female, upbringing and the relation between men and women along with emancipation.
