The prostate or parietal gland is part of the male reproductive system. It is located behind the inguinal bone, under the bladder, and in front of the rectum. It surrounds the prostatic part of the urethra, and through it pass the ejaculatory ducts that open into the urethra. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in developed countries, and is the second most common cause of death from malignancies in men. The most important factors influencing the occurrence are age and familial predisposition, but there are other risk factors that affect the incidence of prostatic cancer such as smoking, alcohol, etc. According to recent epidemiological data, there is an increase in new cases prostate specific antigen (PSA). Surgical removal of the prostate is the best way to treat localized prostate cancer, and a number of surgical techniques have been developed. The surgical methods used are open retropubic radical prostatectomy and laparoscopic and robotically assisted radical prostatectomy. Although no differences in oncological and functional outcomes have been shown between these techniques, the advantage of laparoscopy as a minimally invasive procedure remains, which is less postoperative pain and faster recovery of patients. The nurse caring for the patient before and after prostate cancer surgery must know the techniques of surgical treatment in order to detect postoperative complications in a timely manner.
