Due to its complexity, poetry is considered to be the most demanding literary genre. It is based on the expressive qualities of language through which the poet conveys and communicates certain message and is marked by the characteristics such as stylistic literary devices, language use and socio-cultural aspects, which distinguishes it from other literary genres. These features combine together to form what is known as the poetic voice. Since poetic voice represents distinctive and unique feature of poetry, its translation, or rather, (re)creation, requires particular attention. During the process of translating a piece of literature, the translator’s task is to take each of the aforementioned properties into consideration. The first part of this thesis offers the theoretical background for the understanding of the concept of poetic voice, which is then applied to analysis of poetry written by Scottish poetess Carol Ann Duffy. In its second part, the thesis provides theoretical considerations concerning the process of translating or (re)creating poetry in another language, whereupon it proceeds with the description of the analytical tools applied in the translation of the selected poems from Duffy’s collections The World’s Wife and Feminine Gospels. The analysis presents and describes the approach to problems which occurred during the translation process from English to Croatian language. Finally, the translation analysis is followed by the translation of the selected poems.
