Beginning with the body as a discursive construct and by approaching the category of monsters through Cohen's seven theses, in this work special attention is devoted to the roles of physical monstrosity in the systems of meaning in novels belonging to the genre of speculative fiction, and are thematically defined as dystopia. The central part of the work analyzes semantics of the monster bodies in seven chosen literary works: Handmaids Tale (1985) Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), MaddAddam (2013) by Margaret Atwood; The Slynx (2010) by Tatjana Tolstoj; Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) by Phillip K. Dick and Planet Friedman (2012) by Josip Mlakić. A common feature of these texts is that they use a pattern of monsters in which the body "writes" warning messages as a characteristic genre convention of speculative fiction for expressing a critical attitude toward contemporary social problems. The aim of the paper is to point out the significant changes in the concept of monsters within the semantic systems of various accounts of "possible futures", that is, the current problems projected into the future, in which the dystopian description of social and cultural values is mediated precisely by the meanings transmitted by the monstrous body, what a certain literary "reality" postulates as normal, human and natural.
