This paper has attempted to examine the characteristics of the Elizabethan English observed in Shakespeare’s play Othello. Othello, written in the 17th century, is just one play within William Shakespeare’s vast opus, which includes almost forty plays, more than one hundred sonnets and two long narratives poems. In particular, the focus of this thesis is on the grammatical constructions, that is, morphological and syntactic forms. Firstly, the paper brings a short overview of Shakespeare’s life and work followed by the outline of the play Othello. After that, the brief summary of the history of the English language is presented, especially focusing on the Modern English period. Further on, some of the main features of Shakespearian language are presented, followed by my analysis of the topic, which is divided into two parts, one regarding the morphological formations found in Othello and the other one focusing on its syntax.
