Throughout history, tattoos have been commonly associated with marginalized groups such as bikers, prisoners, gang members, and criminals which gave them a social deviance meaning. Numerous studies from the past two decades indicate a less favorable perception of tattooed individuals and negative attitudes towards them. As negative attitudes can be manifested by overt, negative behavior toward tattooed individuals, researchers have lately focused on the role of visible tattoos in assessing the desirability of potential employees. Accordingly, the aim of the study was to examine attitudes and social distance toward tattooed individuals and relationship between attitudes and social distance. An additional research objective was to examine the role of visible tattoos in assessing the suitability of individuals for various jobs depending on the spatial distance from clients and type of work role. The instrument was designed for research purposes and consisted of photographs of (non)tattooed men and women. Participants evaluated each person on a semantic differential scale, assessed their suitability for four occupations, and finally completed the social distance scale toward tattooed individuals. 58 women and 42 men between the ages of 18 and 68 participated. Research findigs showed that tattooed men and women are perceived more negatively compared to their non-tattooed versions. There were sex differences in attitudes and social distance toward tattooed individuals. Women had more positive attitude and were more willing to accept closer social relationships with tattooed individuals than men. Likewise, tattooed participants and/or those interested in tattooing exhibited a lower degree of social distance compared to non-tattooed participants who are not interested in tattooing. However, the attitudes of the previously mentioned two groups did not differ. The results also indicate a negligible correlation between attitudes and social distance toward tattooed individuals. Furthermore, compared to non-tattooed individuals, visibly tattooed individuals were considered less suitable for a white-collar job with direct cliente contact. Visibly tattooed individuals received the highest suitability estimates for blue-collar job with direct client contact.
