The dark triad was first described by Paulhus and Williams (2002) and is defined as a construct made of three mutually overlapping traits of personality: Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism. These traits are characterized by behavioral tendencies toward self-promotion, emotional coldness, socially malicious character, aggressiveness and manipulation. Lying is a common strategy of managing impressions and social situations, and even though it lies in the background of each of the three characteristics of the dark triad of personality, each characteristic is associated with specific lying motivation. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the characteristics of the dark triad and the motives of lying in men and women, as well as the relationship between these variables and Honesty-Humility factor which is in the background of lying. In this research, the characteristics of the dark triad personality, the Honesty-Humility personality factor and the frequency and motives of participants’ lying were examined, and 278 participants from the general population participated in the "online" questionnaire. The results have shown that there is no correlation between the results on the scale of Machiavellianism and the frequency of lying in men and women. Women with higher narcissism scores lie more for their own benefits, and the correlation of the same variables has not been established in men. The more psychopathy is pronounced in both sexes, the more they lie for no reason, and the more the features of Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy are pronounced in both sexes, the less honest and humble they are. The higher Honesty-Humility factor in men and women is, the lower their frequency of lying, as well as lying for their own benefit, their lying efficiency self-assessment, lying for no reason and lying to a smaller number of different people. Men score higher results on psychopathy and Machiavellianism than women, but there is no difference between men and women in narcissism, Honesty-Humility personality factor, lying without reason and lying in order to avoid hurting another person. Women tend to lie more often, more often out of their own benefits, they rate their ability to lie higher and lie to a greater number of people than men do.
