Die literarische Gestaltung der konsekutiven Deportationen in eine Wüste, ohne Ziel, mit der Absicht, eine Nation vollständig auszurotten, wurde von Franz Werfel durch wahre Ereignisse ergänzt und mit zahlreichen biblischen Motive ausgearbeitet. Gabriel Bagradian, ein Franzose armenischer Abstammung, kehrt zu seinen Wurzeln zurück, um den letzten Wunsch seines sterbenden Bruders zu erfüllen, das Familienerbe zu übernehmen. Aber das Schicksal spielt sich anders aus. Zusammen mit seiner schönen Frau Juliette und seinem jungen Sohn Stephan gerät Gabriel in eine ungewisse Qual mit mehreren tausend Menschen. Das Volk, das in den sieben Dörfern am Fuße des Musa-Dagh-Hügels am Rande der Türkei in Richtung Mittelmeer lebte, beginnt einen Kampf um Leben und Tod. Njegovo remek-djelo „Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh“ (1933; „Četrdeset dana Musa Daga“) opisuje istrebljivanje i genocid nad Armencima, koje je počinila osmanska vojska za vrijeme Prvog svjetskog rata u Osmanskom Carstvu.

Gabrijel Bagradian, Francuz armenskog porijekla, vraća se svojim korijenima kako bi ispunio posljednju želju umirućeg brata i preuzeo obiteljsko naslijeđe. No sudbina se poigrava na svoj način. Franz Werfel’s literary shaping of the consecutive deportations of the people to a desert, without a goal, with the intention of completely exterminating this nation, was supplemented by real events and worked out with numerous biblical motifs by the author. Gabriel Bagradian, a Frenchman of Armenian descent, returns to his roots to fulfil the dying brother's last wish to take over the family inheritance. But fate has played out differently. Together with his beautiful wife Juliette and his young son Stephan Gabriel gets into an uncertain torment together with several thousand people. The people who lived in the seven villages at the foot of the Musa Dagh (meaning “Moses mountain”), on the edge of Turkey towards the Mediterranean, begin its life-and-death struggle. Its only refuge are God and the mountain Musa Dagh on which they are being stationed. With an abundance of violence, sacrifice and pain, this people succeed in defeating the tyrant whose sole aim is extermination. Gabriel loses everything on the mountain: his marriage, his wife and finally his son. The greatest loss that all protagonists have experienced is the loss of identity.
