Ship recycling is the most favorable way to dispose of them after service life when carried out in facilities that use technology and procedures that ensure the protection of the environment and human health. However, the largest share of ships (90% according to 2018 data ) is recycled in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, China, and Turkey, violating human rights and polluting the environment. Ships are most often disassembled on the beaches by workers without training, protective equipment, and the necessary tools and machines. Therefore, accidents at work are common, so recycling ships is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. A special problem is child labor. Furthermore, when disassembling ships, harmful substances such as oil and derivatives, heavy metals, and asbestos are released into the environment. The BSc Thesis describes the current practice of ship recycling and lists the biggest problems that arise. The harmful substances that are emitted and their impact on human health are described. Legal solutions and their shortcomings are presented. A possible role for nurses/technicians in raising awareness of this problem is suggested.
