Abstract Diplomski rad govori o poznatom zagrebačkom nadbiskupu Alojziju Stepincu. Njegovo odrastanje, mladost i život obilježili su važni politički događaji poput: osnutka Kraljevine Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca (1918.), lipanjskog atentata (1928.), šestosiječanjske diktature (1929.), sloma
... More Jugoslavije (1941.), nastanka NDH (1941.) i njezina konačnog sloma (1945.). Less
Abstract (english) The thesis is about the well-known Archbishop of Zagreb, Alojzije Stepinac. He is remembered as a great humanitarian worker who devoted his entire life to caring for the weak, helpless, and displaced. He was born in Brezarić on May 8, 1898., during the reign of Dragutin Khuen-Hedervary. His upbringing, youth and life were marked by important political events such as: the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs,Croats and Slovenes (1918.), the assassination in June (1928.), the
... More dictatorship of Aleksandar Karađorđević (1929.), the breakup of Yugoslavia (1941.), the creation of the Independent State of Croatia (1941.) and its final collapse (1945.). He completed his studies in philosophy and theology in Rome, where he was ordained a priest in October 1930. Pope Pius XI appointed him coadjutor archbishop on May 29, 1934, making him the youngest bishop in the world at the age of 36. After the death of Archbishop Dr. Antun Bauer on December 7, 1937, Stepinac became the residential archbishop of Zagreb. In the same year, he founded the Caritas of the Zagreb Archdiocese. Stepinac's humanitarian work was particularly significant during World War II, during which he strongly condemned all cruel and inhumane actions, regardless of which side they came from. In his humanitarian work, the Archbishop of Zagreb advocated for the opening of children's homes and soup kitchens, took care of numerous refugees and war orphans, protected the Serbian people, Jews, Catholics, Roma, Slovenian priests, and numerous Polish children who needed charitable care. He also advocated for Croatian citizens in Italian concentration camps. After the war, the new communist authorities called Stepinac a war criminal for alleged collaboration with the occupiers, and he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in a politically motivated trial in 1946. He served his sentence in Lepoglava (1946- 1951) and in Krašić from 1951 until his death in 1960. Less
