Korištene su Skala pozitivnog i negativnog perfekcionizma (PNPS; Terry-Short i sur., 1995), Kratka skala samokontrole (BSCS; Tangney i sur., 2004) i Skala samootežavanja (SHS; Rhodewalt, 1990). |
Abstract (english) | Considering that personal standards, the ability to resist temptations and self-handicapping tendencies often impact our performance and outcomes in various areas of life, including the academic context, some reasearchers were interested in the relationship between perfectionism, self-control and self-handicapping. Although past research indicates the existance of a link between maladaptive perfectionism and self-handicapping, there is considerably less consensus about the relationship between adaptive perfectionism and self-handicapping. Besides, very little research explored the relationship between self-control and self-handicapping in detail. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-control, adaptive perfectionism, maladaptive perfectionism and self-handicapping, as well as to determine whether adaptive perfectionists, maladaptive perfectionists and non-perfectionists differ in their self-control level and self-handicapping tendencies. The study was conducted online, with a total of 109 University of Zadar students as participants; more specifically, 89 women and 20 men in the age range of 19 to 40. The scales that were used are the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (PNPS; Terry-Short et al., 1995), the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS; Tangney et al., 2004) and the Self-Handicapping Scale (SHS; Rhodewalt, 1990). The results revealed that self-control correlated negatively with self-handicapping. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between maladaptive perfectionism and self-handicapping, whereas adaptive perfectionism was not significantly related to self-handicapping. Furthermore, the results showed that, on average, adaptive perfectionists scored higher on self-control scale than maladaptive perfectionists, and that maladaptive perfectionists self-handicapped more than adaptive perfectionists and non-perfectionists, who did not differ significantly regarding self-handicapping. |
