From the global perspective of world literature, Croatian literature is regarded as belonging to the literature of small nations. Therefore, it occupies a peripheral position in a global literary system. Its access into the global literary market depends not only on linguistic and cultural translation but also on the promotion, literary power relations within a system and a certain degree of conformity to market rules. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the factors that contribute to the recognition and reception of Croatian writers in world literature and explain the processes and mechanisms, which allow the work to enter the space of world literature from its national corpus. For the purpose of this analysis, a case study was conducted regarding the works of three prominent contemporary Croatian writers, Slavenka Drakulić, Miljenko Jergović and Dubravka Ugrešić in order to gain insight into the production, circulation and reception of their work. From all the data collected, it is evident that there is a variety of factors contributing to the authors‘ recognition and reception, neither one of them that could be interpreted in isolation. However, it can be stated that all three authors, each displaced to a different country due to the tragic circumstances caused by the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, were brought together to the international literary marketplace in which they, being labeled as exile writers, were able to find their specific niche within the sphere of world literature.
