Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to show how women’s roles in Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale are related to traditional gender roles and how this affects women’s reproductive rights. The thesis will look into the performative character of gender roles by referring to Judith Butler and display how it dictates women’s behavior and society’s expectations of women. It will examine childbirth as a part of the female gender roles and the emergence of the fetus as the “victim” of a woman’s free... More will. The historical and political background of the novel will provide a context in which it was written, and also show the examples of events from human history which inspired practices depicted in the novel warning the readers that such future is possible anywhere at any time. Cilj ovog rada je prikazati kako su uloge žena u romanu Margaret Atwood, Sluškinjina priča povezane s tradicionalnim rodnim ulogama i kako to utječe na reproduktivna prava žena. Diplomski rad će promotriti performativni karakter rodnih uloga pozivajući se na Judith Butler i prikazati kako on diktira ponašanje žena i očekivanja društva. Proučit će se porod kao dio ženskih rodnih uloga te kako je fetus postao „žrtva“ slobodne volje žene. Povijesna će i politička pozadina romana dati kontekst u... More kojem je roman napisan, ali i pokazati primjere događaja iz ljudske povijesti koji su inspirirali prakse prikazane u romanu upozoravajući čitatelje da je takva budućnost moguća bilo gdje i bilo kada.
