Abstract
The topic of this final thesis is the analysis of French and Latin borrowings in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (General Prologue, The Knight's Tale, The Wife of Bath's Prologue and The Second Nun's Prologue). More precisely, this diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the adaptation of French and Latin words from the chosen Canterbury Tales on the semantic level. Moreover, the main aim is to analyze and discuss whether or not the French and Latin loans from analysed tales underwent any semantic changes in the process of linguistic borrowing. In order to conduct the thorough analysis of the topic, Rudolf Filipović's approach has been used as a guide since Filipović himself had made an immense contribution to the field of contact linguistics. The central part of the paper involves the analysis of the French and Latin borrowings from the analysed stories by focusing on the type of semantic change, such as zero extension, restriction and extension of meaning. Finally, the sociolinguistic context of the analysed stories has been discussed to examine whether there is any significant relationship between the different semantic fields, represented in the characters' vocabulary, and their social background.
Abstract (croatian)
Tema ovog rada je analiza posuđenica u Chaucerovim Kanterburijskim pričama (General Prologue, The Knight's Tale, The Wife of Bath's Prologue and The Second Nun's Prologue). Rad se bavi analizom semantičkih promjena u izabranim Kanterburijskim pričama. Dakle, cilj rada je analizirati francuske i latinske posuđenice u izabranim Kanterburijskim pričama te na temelju analize spomenutih priča utvrditi do kojih je semantičkih promjena došlo ako se osvrenmo na značenje riječi nekad i sad. Naime, analiza pokazuje jesu li i u kojoj mjeri francuske i latinske posuđenice pretrpjele semantičke promjene. Kako bi se provela detaljna analiza, kao teoretski okvir korišten je pristup Rudolfa Filipovića, ponajviše zbog značajnog doprinosa u toj domeni. Središnji dio rada sadrži analizu francuskih i latinskih posuđenica iz priča s fokusom na semantičke promjene koje su uslijedile. Naposljetku, sociolingvistički kontekst analiziranih priča doprinosi razumijevanju veze između pripadnosti likova različitim klasama te nihove upotrebe jezika.
