Abstract (croatian) Thomas Mann spada među najpoznatije njemačke spisatelje.
Abstract (english) Thomas Mann is among the most famous German writers. He had a rather turbulent life which he described in his works. In his work, “Tod in Venedig” (Death in Venice) he writes about a writer, Gustav von Aschenbach, who has lost his purpose in life and decides to go on a journey in order to find it. However, what Aschenbach does not realize is that the journey will not be the way he imagined. The theme of the work is to prove the presence of apories in Aschenbach's life. The word itself ‘aporie’, means doubt and hopelessness, and the very existence of those feelings will be proved in this work. Through the analysis of the book, several contradictions that hold Aschenbach's life in place will be presented. These contradictions will ultimately be his failure. These contradictions are divided into several chapters: 1) homosexuality and heterosexuality, 2) Apollonian and Dionysian, 3) life and death, and 4) old age and youth. Each chapter is backed up by quotations from the text, and some chapters also include some theoretical backgrounds such as those of Freud and Nietzsche.
