Abstract Rad tematizira Brochov književni prikaz totalitarizma u društvu kroz medij romana.
Rad ponajprije naglašava povijesni kontekst u kojem nastaje ovo djelo, te Brochov način pisanja u kojem radnju ovog romana smješta u jednu drugu vremenski epohu tj. antiku. Time Broch kao prvo stvara vlastitu distancu/odmak od djela i samog totalitarnog režima. Također stvara distancu kod samog recipijenta tj. čitatelja djela i time ga potiče na razmišljanje, djelovanje i promjenu.
Abstract (english) The topic of the present thesis is Borch's literary representation of totalitarianism in society, i.e. an attempt to represent totalitarianism, its traits and literary criticism through Broch's novel The death of Virgil. The aim of the thesis is to prove the existence of totalitarianism and its characteristics in this Broch's novel and, at the same time, to criticise it.
Primarily, the thesis emphasises the historical context in which the novel is written and Broch's way of writing where he places the novel in another period of time, classical antiquity. Thus he manages to create a distance between the literary work and the totalitarian regime itself. Furthermore, he also creates distance with the recipient, i.e the reader of the novel and by doing that encourages the reader to think, act and change. Considering the issues found in topics Broch deals with, e.g. the decline of Western European society, civilization and values, it is clear that the author penetrates deep topic which are not readable to the average reader.
All in all, the present thesis focuses on the analysis of the precisely chosen excerpts from the novel, proving the existence of the elements of totalitarianism in them as well as explaining and criticising those elements. Taking into account all the possible layers and aspects of society, the role of rulers, poets and art in the state which Broch has boldly presented in this novel we come to the conclusion and criticism of the author and his attitude towards totalitarianism as a political system.
