Abstract
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a novel written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll in 1865. In spite of the claims that it is untranslatable and that one needs to be English in order to enjoy it, this novel soon became a classic of children’s literature and it has been translated into more than 176 languages. In this thesis, six translations of Carroll’s novel into Croatian were analysed, with the focus on the concept of the translator’s invisibility. This term, introduced by Lawrence Venuti, refers to appearance that a translation is not in fact a translation, but an original, which occurs thanks to various interventions made by the translator. The first part of the thesis deals with children’s literature, its translation and Venuti’s concept. The second chapter is dedicated to the novel itself, and to the challenges that it poses to translators, primarily regarding character names, other culture-specific items and wordplay. In the third chapter, there follows the analysis of these issues. Its aim was to determine which strategies were employed by Croatian translators, how successfully, and to see how their choices affected invisibility in their translations. The analysis showed that the translators were generally more invisible when dealing with wordplay than with other issues, such as character names, in which they mostly followed the source-text. Also, the concept of invisibility is complex, it varies from one example or translational problem to another, and in some cases it may be susceptible to various interpretations.

Alica u Zemlji čudesa roman je koji je napisao Charles Lutwidge Dodgson pod pseudonimom Lewis Carroll 1865. godine. Unatoč tome što su neki tvrdili da je neprevodiv i da je potrebno biti Englez da bi se u njemu uživalo, ovaj roman ubrzo je postao klasik dječje književnosti, a do danas je preveden na više od 176 jezika. U ovom radu, analizirat će se šest prijevoda Carrollovog romana na hrvatski jezik, s naglaskom na koncept nevidljivosti prevoditelja. Taj pojam uveo je Lawrence Venuti, a odnosi se na dojam da određeni prijevod nije prijevod, već originalno djelo, što je posljedica raznih prevoditeljevih intervencija. U prvom dijelu rada, govori se o dječjoj književnosti i njenom prevođenju, ali i o ovom Venutijevom pojmu. Drugo poglavlje posvećeno je samom romanu i izazovima koje predstavlja za prevoditelje, prvenstveno kod prijevoda imena likova, ostalih kulturno-specifičnih elemenata te igre riječi. U trećem poglavlju, slijedi analiza hrvatskih prijevoda s obzirom na ove probleme. Cilj analize bio je utvrditi koje su strategije koristili hrvatski prevoditelji, s koliko uspjeha i na koji se način to odrazilo na njihovu nevidljivost u tekstu. Na kraju, pokazalo se da su hrvatski prevoditelji bili općenito najmanje vidljivi pri prevođenju igre riječi dok su se u drugim pitanjima puno više držali izvornika, posebno u prijevodu imena likova. Također, pojam nevidljivosti prevoditelja dosta je kompleksan, varira od jednog do drugog primjera ili prevoditeljskog problema, a kod nekih pitanja moguće ga je tumačiti na više načina.
