Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
The aim of this thesis rests on the notion that the discussion about dysthanasia or “therapeutic obstinacy” cannot be solely confined on the issue of futility, that is, the use or abuse of life-sustaining medical treatments. The question of end-of-life decision making calls for rethinking the questions of the meaning of life, dying and death, and it also requires an ethical reflection in the form of questioning the criteria and values upon which we orient ourselves in making ethical judgments about dysthanasia. For that purpose, dysthanasia is approached in the light of the “quality of life” ethics, the “sanctity of life” ethics, the “bioethical paradigme principle” and the ethics of care, indicating why the question of human dignity remains a key normative aspect.
