Abstract (croatian) Kad je rad zadovoljstvo, život je užitak.
Abstract (english) « When work is pleasure, life is an enjoyment. When work is a chore, life is a prison » is a deep thought of Maksim Gorky which truly makes you think what motivates a person to work – internal pleasure or existential need. Since people are different, and also because their behaviour, as well as their motivation, are very complicated concepts that depend from person to person, it is difficult to answer the question wether work is pleasure or a need. Therefore, this thesis is dedicated to the factors which have an affect on motivation and the teachers call of the french language. Through the theoretical part and through research which was conducted on twenty teachers of the french language from Zadar and Koprivnica, it is explained which factors influence the work and motivation of teachers and, primarily, what influnced their choice of profession. Moreover, the very concept of motivation is very complicated to define. Taking all explanations of the concept of motivation which were given in several cited sources in this paper, it can be said that motivation is a set of drivers (motives) that lead to a specific purposeful human activity. There are different types of motivation, but in this paper the focus is on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and self-actualization, i.e. the realization of all (or almost all) of one's own motives and needs, are emphasized. Motivation is unquestionalbly important for work, and in the school system it is of great importance for the accomplishment of teachers and their students. Namely, it is necessary that the techer is motivated to work in a specific way, because otherwise, neither the students will be encouraged in participation in class nor for learning. Indeed, the conducted research confirmed this claim, and in a big part it showed how the intrinsic motivation is far more important and more present in the teachers of the french language than extrinsic motivation. Nevertheless, various extrinsic factors such as working conditions affect the work of teachers, but fortunately, to a very small extent on their motivation to work with pupils and students.
