Abstract
This paper analyzes the use and role of domestic space in horror novels The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons, the novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, and the short story The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. The domestic space in the selected works is analyzed based on the theory of the uncanny by Sigmund Freud, which postulates that the feeling of the uncanniness surfaces when something familiar becomes unfamiliar or when something hidden and repressed comes to light. The analysis illustrates that the feeling of the uncanniness that the domestic space evokes in the characters is a result of inner conflicts related to social issues and the characters’ own identity and individuality, and that the haunted houses are closely connected to and represent the characters’ minds.

Parallel abstract (Croatian)
U ovom radu analizira se uloga prostora kuće u horor romanima The Haunting of Hill House Shirley Jackson, The House Next Door Anne Rivers Siddons, u noveli Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Roberta Louisa Stevensona, i kratkoj priči The Fall of the House of Usher Edgara Allana Poea.
