Abstract
This thesis provides a brief summary of the founding American myths and symbols that are still influential for American thought today and the discourse surrounding the United States and its supposed exceptionalism or superiority to other countries. Myths are presented and unveiled through relevant historical facts to demonstrate the differences between an idealized American nation and the circumstances regarding the racial and ethnic social groups in the country. The main focus of the thesis is the multicultural society that now exists in the United States, and, more specifically, the literary system of such a diverse nation. Furthermore, the thesis analyses the novelties in the original literature, as well as in translations of such literature, along with new issues that emerge for literary translators

Ovaj diplomski rad donosi kratak sažetak mitova i simbola koji su pomogli oblikovati američku naciju a koji još uvijek imaju velik utjecaj na američku misao i diskurs o Sjedinjenim Državama te pretpostavkama o njihovoj iznimnosti ili superiornosti nad drugim državama . Mitovi su navedeni i razotkriveni kroz relevantne povijesne činjenice kako bi se ukazalo na razliku između idealizirane slike SAD-a i stvarnih okolnosti rasnih i etničkih grupa unutar države. Rad se fokusira na multikulturalno društvo kakvo sada postoji u SAD-u i, preciznije, na književni sustav tako raznolike nacije. Rad analizira novine takve izvorne književnosti, kao i poteškoće koje stvara za književne prevodioce.
