Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to analyse Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale and explore its prominent themes of gender, power and oppression. These themes will be read in the context of the dystopian setting of the novel. This study employs Foucault’s theoretical works for the chapters regarding power, hierarchy, and sexuality to emphasise the aim of Gilead. The main protagonists and their motives will also be analysed in the light of gender perspective for the part of female rivalry and alliances, and Offred’s romantic narrative. To discern whether there are signs of rebellion and resistance, this paper will examine Offred’s relationship with Nick, the interrelationship of patriarchy and the use of language, as well as the significance of Offred’s narration. Lastly, the struggle to maintain an authentic identity in a dystopian society will also be a part of this thesis.
Abstract (croatian)
Cilj ovog diplomskog rada bio je analizirati roman Sluškinjina priča Margaret Atwood u okviru tema rod, moć i opresija. Navedene teme bit će sagledane u kontekstu distopijskog romana. Ovaj rad proučava teorijske radove Foucaulta za poglavlja vezana za moć, hijerarhiju i seksualnost kako bi se naglasio cilj Gileada. Glavni likovi i njihovi motivi također će biti analizirani temeljem rodne perspektive za dio razvoj ženskog suparništva i suradnje, kao i Offredinih romantičnih veza. Kako bi se razlučilo postoji li prisutnost pobune i otpora, ovaj rad ispitat će Offredinu vezu s Nickom, povezanost patrijarhije i korištenja jezika te značaj pripovijedanja. Na kraju, istražit će se teškoća pojedinca za ostvarivanjem autentičnog identiteta u distopijskom društvu.
