Abstract
Witches have always been an enigma since many stereotypes surround them and it is difficult to find their true meaning in a sea of lies and misinformation. Even though opinions vary, it can be noticed that there are indeed two main portrayals within the horror genre. Witches can be distinguished either as evil crones or as strong feminist icons. Therefore, this paper deals with the study of how these two depictions came to be and what helped shape them. These are not mere illustrations but testaments of important social issues that still need to be discussed and confronted. The stereotypes that paint a negative picture of a witch can be found in different media and exist purely because of misogyny. A response to this is the evolution of the witch as a feminist heroine who fights against this kind of oppression and serves as a role model for all “witches”. In order to gain more insight into this claim, three films and one television series will be up for analysis.
Abstract (croatian)
Vještice su oduvijek bile zagonetka zbog mnogih stereotipa koji ih okružuju i teško je u moru laži i pogrešnih informacija pronaći pravo značenje koje se krije iza njih. Iako se mišljenja razlikuju, može se primijetiti da postoje dva glavna prikaza unutar horor žanra. Vještice se mogu odrediti kao zle, stare i neprivlačnog izgleda ili kao odvažne feminističke ikone. Stoga, ovaj rad će se baviti s proučavanjem načina na koji su nastali ovakvi prikazi i što ih je pomoglo oblikovati. Ovo nisu puke ilustracije već dokaz o važnim društvenim problemima o kojima je potrebno raspraviti i s kojima se treba suočiti. Stereotipi koji stvaraju negativnu sliku vještice i koji se mogu pronaći u različitim vrstama medija, postoje isključivo zbog mizoginije. Kao odgovor na to nastao je tip vještice u obliku feminističke heroine koja se bori protiv ovakvog potlačivanja i koja služi kao uzor svim „vješticama“. Kako bi se dobilo više saznanja o ovoj tvrdnji analizirat će se tri filma i jedna televizijska serija.
