Abstract
This paper deals with the comparative analysis of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale and creator Bruce Miller’s 2017 TV series, and aims to describe and present changes in dystopian elements in both versions. Aside from the dystopian theory and the examination of political atmosphere, which greatly influenced the genre, this paper also gives an overview of the theory of adaptation used in the analysis of the TV series. The analysis includes topics such as changes of characterization, representation of racial and sexual differences and depiction of parenthood.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj se rad bavi usporednom analizom romana Sluškinjina priča Margaret Atwood iz 1985. godine i TV serijalom iz 2017. tvorca Brucea Millera, te je cilj opisati i predstaviti promjene distopijskih elemenata u obje verzije. Osim teorije distopije i prikaza političke atmosfere koja ima snažan utjecaj na žanr, ovaj rad također pruža pregled teorije adaptacije korištene u analizi serije. Analiza uključuje teme kao što su promjene u karakterizaciji, prikaz rasnih i seksualnih razlika te opis roditeljstva.
