Abstract
Children’s literature continues to be a complex and debatable field of translation studies. Consequently, contrary to popular belief, translating children’s literature may present a great challenge even for an experienced translator. Since children have a special approach to books and reading, a children’s book has to be seen from a different perspective and the translator often has to make certain adjustments for children that are not required for adults. The thesis provides with the main characteristics of children’s literature and demonstrates how the theoretical approaches and strategies used in translating children’s literature can be applied in practice. My translation of the beginning of the children’s novel The Terrible Two, written by Mac Barnett and Jory John, illustrates possible problems with translating illustrations, names, language and humorous style and the approach to the text to successfully overcome those problems.
Abstract (croatian)
Definicija dječje književnosti i dalje je sporna, stoga, usprkos popularnom vjerovanju, prevođenje knjiga za djecu predstavlja izazov čak i iskusnim prevoditeljima. Budući da djeca pristupaju knjigama na poseban način, prevoditelji moraju dječju književnost sagledati iz drugačije perspektive i ući u dječji svijet, što najčešće zahtijeva znatne prilagodbe, koje nisu potrebne pri prevođenju knjiga za odrasle. Cilj ovog rada je navesti glavna obilježja dječje književnosti i prikazati kako se teorija i strategije prevođenja dječjih knjiga mogu primijeniti u praksi na primjeru mojeg prijevoda početnog dijela romana The Terrible Two (u prijevodu Majstori za spačke). Izabrani roman Maca Barnetta i Joryja Johna prikazuje probleme pri prevođenju ilustracija, imena, jezičnih i stilskih obilježja te njihova moguća rješenja u priloženom prijevodu.
