Abstract
This paper presents a brief insight into the development of the gangster genre, from its beginning in the silent era up to the appearance of The Godfather saga. Apart from the genre’s history, the focus is placed on the stylistic elements of the first two films of The Godfather Trilogy and their stylistic characteristics. These include narrative techniques, miseen-scène, cinematography, sound and other aspects of filmmaking that influence the meaning and the overall style of any film. The paper also covers gender issues presented in the films along with a comparison to the novels, upon which the films were based. Similarly, the paper also provides an insight into different uses of stylistic elements in the films in comparison to the novel.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad pruža kratak uvid u razvoj gangsterskog filma, od samih početaka iz vremena nijemog filma sve do pojave filmske sage Kum. Osim povijesti gangsterskog filma, fokus je stavljen na stilske elemente prva dva filma trilogije Kum te njihove stilske karakteristike. Oni uključuju narativne tehnike, mizanscenu, fotografiju, zvuk te druge dijelove koji utječu na značenje te na sveukupni filmski stil. Rad se također osvrće na rodne uloge u filmovima skupa s usporedbom istih s romanom na osnovu kojeg su filmovi napravljeni. Na sličan način rad pruža uvid u različite stilske elemente u usporedbi s onima iz romana.
