Abstract
The main focus of the research is directed at the analysis of the ways in which the author portrays the character of Sir William Whitey Gull, personal physician of Queen Victoria, as the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper. Particular emphasis is put on the role of space in relation to the characterization and the motivation of the killer. This is primarily done by examining the function of the city of London as well as its historic landmarks in the process of creating the character of Jack the Ripper. The concept of the serial killer is further elaborated as the direct product of the Victorian society which proves itself to be another one of the key factors of the author’s portrayal, its patriarchal oppression of women as well as its questionable moral contributing to the execution of the murders.
Abstract (croatian)
Glavni fokus istraživanja usmjeren je na analizu načina na koji autor prikazuje lik Willijama Whiteyja Gulla, osobnog liječnika kraljice Viktorije, kao notornog serijskog ubojicu Jacka Rasparača. Poseban naglasak stavljen je na ulogu prostora u karakterizaciji i motivaciji ubojice. To je prije svega ostvareno kroz analizu funkcije grada Londona i njegovih povijesnih znamenitosti u procesu stvaranja lika Jacka Rasparača. Koncept serijskog ubojice dalje je razrađen kao direktan produkt viktorijanskog društva koje je prikazano kao jedan od ključnih čimbenika u autorovom prikazu, gdje njegove glavne značajke – patrijarhalna opresija žena i upitan moral potiču izvršenje ubojstava.
