Nevertheless, it is a very important component, because, more often than not, it has an active role in constructing human lives and influencing their actions. Many movies use space in such context to express the critique of the mainstream society and its norms. The aim of this work was to investigate how space was used in the work of American film director David Lynch and how it consequently exposed the American society as not so perfect as presented to us by the mainstream media. Michel Foucault’s division of space to utopia and heterotopia can be applied to lynch’s work. Foucault, in his essay Of Other Spaces, described utopia as a place of absolute perfection and a perfect social order that, as such does not and cannot exist in reality. On the other hand, heterotopias are viewed as their countersites, places that do exist in reality and function like a broken mirror to utopian spaces; they, at the same time reflect and distort them. They function as some sort of compensation for all the perfection utopian spaces offer us. Whether on purpose or not, David Lynch abundantly used heterotopian spaces in his movies. In this work, his movies such as Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway have been analyzed following this scheme, as well as Alejandro Amenabar’s The Others. In all these movies the concept of heterotopia was used to expose the mainstream American society as faulty in its essence and also to offer a covert critique of such society and its view of morality.
Abstract (croatian) Paradigma prostora je vrlo često zanemarena u kontekstu popularne kulture. Bez obzira na to, ima vrlo važnu ulogu jer vrlo često aktivno sudjeluje u konstuiranju ljudskih života i oblikovanju ljudske aktivnosti. U mnogo filmova, paradigma prostora se koristi kako bi se izrazila suptilna kritika suvremenog društva i njegovih normi. Cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti kako američki redatelj David Lynch koristi prostor u svome radu te posljedično, kako upravo kroz prostor, razotkriva lažnu sliku savršenog američkog društva koja nam je servirana kroz mainstream medije. Foucaultova podjela prostora na utopiju i heterotopiju može se primjeniti na Lynchov rad. Foucault, u svom eseju opisuje utopiju kaju mjesto apsolutnog savršenstva gdje vlada savršeno uređen društveni poredak, koji, kao takav, ne može postojati u stvarnosti. S druge strane, heterotopije su prostori koji su u suprotnosti s utopijama, oni postoje u stvarnosti i njihova funkcija je funkcija razbijenog stakla naspram utopiji: oni je reflektioraju, ali ne takvu kakva ona jest već prikazuju izvrnutu sliku te savršene utopije. One postoje kao neka vrsta kompenzacije za svo savršenstvo koje nudi utopija. Da li namjerno ili ne, heterootopijski prostori su mnogo zastupljeni u filmovima Davida Lyncha. U ovom je radu napravljena analiza nekih njegovih filmova kao što su Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive i Lost Highway kao I Alejandro Amenabarov The Others prema heterotopijskoj schemi. U svim tim filmovima, koncept heterotopije je korišten kako bi se suvremeno američko društvo prikazalo kao manjkavo u svojoj srži te kako bi se također ponudila suptilna kritika takvog društva i njegovog pogleda na moral.
