Abstract Ovaj rad istražuje prikaz žene u umjetničkom pravcu simbolizma krajem 19. i početkom 20. stoljeća, u kontekstu promjena društvenih normi i rodnih uloga.
... More poticali patrijarhalne vrijednosti društva, smještajući ženu u ambivalentne i često kontradiktorne uloge.
Abstract (english) This paper explores the depiction of women in the Symbolist art movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, within the context of changing social norms and gender roles. During this period, Symbolist artists often portrayed women as archetypal figures, linking them with themes such as eroticism, death, spirituality, and mystery. Male artists frequently idealized women through the lens of the male gaze, representing them as muses, seductresses, or embodiments of divine or fatal
... More forces. These depictions reflected and reinforced the patriarchal values of society, placing women in ambivalent and often contradictory roles. On the other hand, although few in number, women artists used Symbolism to express their own identities and introspections, striving to take control of their representation in art. This paper also examines how feminist theory, including authors like John Berger, Linda Nochlin, and Griselda Pollock, reconsiders the role of women in Symbolism and critiques the male gaze that dominates artistic representations of that period. Particular emphasis is placed on the works of key Symbolist artists such as Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, Gustav Klimt, and Edvard Munch, analyzing their portrayals of women within the cultural and social norms of the time. The goal of this paper is to illustrate the complex relationships between art, gender roles, and cultural changes that shaped the artistic representation of women in Symbolism. Less
