In this master’s thesis I analyzed female characters in the novel “Butterfly skin” written by Sergey Kuznetsov. The main objective of the analysis was to compare the characterization of heroines with the system of stereotypes often mentioned in everyday life as well as in various researches regarding women’s role in society. In the novel, female heroines are often subverting stereotypes that have been imposed on women during centuries. The abovementioned stereotypes concern women’s rights to make decisions about their own bodies, such as abortion. Also, women are presented as sexual beings, not just as mothers and wives. Furthermore, the stereotype representing men as the stronger sex is weakened by the introduction of strong female characters. Kuzetsov also rejects the stereotype of women as intellectually inferior and unable to become successful. Although the whole issue of stereotypes has not been entirely solved in the novel, it did put female characterization in the spotlight. The last part of the thesis is related to the role of the narrator in the novel, and how female characters were defined by its point of view.
