Abstract
This study aims to find out how Istrian people express their identities through the use of languages or dialects on social networking sites, particularly on Facebook. As one of the biggest social media platforms, Facebook is home to a wide range of groups dedicated to preserving regional identities and dialects. This study focuses on the Region of Istria since, due to its history, it is an area of great linguistic variety with various spoken languages and dialects. There exist many Facebook groups where people from Istria, including those who live in Istria and those who live abroad, interact virtually. Moreover, comments from two Facebook groups were analyzed. The qualitative method and semi-structured interviews were employed to acquire insight into people's personal viewpoints and attitudes regarding identity and its many different elements. The results highlighted the differences between older people and younger people. They also revealed the two most important elements of identity, as perceived by the participants, as well as through which language/dialect people express themselves. In order to further improve this research, solely the comments of interviewed participants should be analyzed in order to acquire a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of what is behind their expression of identity through social networks.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovim se istraživanjem nastoji otkriti kako ljudi u Istri izražavaju svoj identitet korištenjem jezika ili dijalekata na društvenim mrežama, posebice na Facebooku. Kao jedna od najvećih platformi društvenih medija, Facebook je dom širokom spektru grupa posvećenih očuvanju regionalnih identiteta i dijalekata. Ovo istraživanje usmjereno je na Istarsku županiju budući da je ona, zbog svoje povijesti, područje velike jezične raznolikosti s različitim govornim jezicima i dijalektima. Postoje mnoge Facebook grupe u kojima ljudi iz Istre, oni koji žive u Istri te oni koji žive u inozemstvu, virtualno komuniciraju. Također, analizirani su komentari dviju Facebook grupa. Kvalitativna metoda i polustrukturirani intervjui korišteni su kako bi se dobio uvid u osobna stajališta i stavove ljudi o identitetu i njegovim različitim elementima. Rezultati su istaknuli razlike između starijih i mlađih ljudi. Također su otkrili dva najvažnija elementa identiteta, prema sudionicima, kao i kojim se jezikom/dijalektom ljudi izražavaju. Kako bi se ovo istraživanje dodatno unaprijedilo, potrebno je analizirati isključivo komentare intervjuiranih sudionika kako bi se steklo cjelovitije i dublje razumijevanje onoga što stoji iza njihovog izražavanja identiteta putem društvenih mreža.
