Sociology begun a systematic study od emotions in seventies of last century. Exspressing emotions is learned by socialization in society and in social emotional culture. Emotion work is used by both men and women, but they are experiencing emotional work in different ways. Th e paper presents theoretical approaches of emotions and possible differences in emotional culture of feminine and masculine gender focusing on relations in marriage. Empirical findings related to topic are also presented in order to get insights into the existence and direction of gender differences in emotional work in marriage. Although it turned out that some gender stereotypes about emotionality are exaggerated most studies still confirm that women are more emotional gender. Result of rooted gender divi sion of emotions is lower willingnes of men to recognize and express their needs on an emotional level. Inequalities in real or expressed emotional needs for intimacy are associated with gender inequalities in power. According to research conducted by Wilcox i Nock (2006) emotional work of husband in marriage is a key determinant of marital quality for women, it is more important predictor than household labor, perception of equality in household labor, child care and level of education. In the overall emot ional experience emotional work is not equally important for men and women and generally it has greater significance for women. In the dominantly male society emotional work remains invisible and unrewarded, and skills in emotional work underrated.
