Abstract (english) | Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the level of professional stress of nurses in palliative care, the association of professional stress with general stress, stress resilience, sleepiness, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and personality, and to analyze the mentioned variables in nurses that provide palliative nursing care compared to those who do not provide palliative care. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by distributing an online questionnaire in which participated 185 nurses working in health institutions of the Republic of Croatia. A questionnaire of sociodemographic data, personality, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, sleepiness, stress resilience, general stress and nurses' stress were applied. We used absolute numbers and percentages to describe categorical variables, and median and interquartile range for numerical variables. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to test the difference between groups. The association between variables was analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Results: Nurses who provide palliative nursing care have a higher level of professional stress when compared to nurses who do not provide palliative nursing care. Professional stress of nurses is associated with general stress, stress resilience, sleepiness, self-esteem, anxiety, depression and emotional stability. Conclusion: According to the impact of professional stressors on nurses' physical and mental health, psychological well-being, as well as the quality of care and the organization of the entire health system, it is extremely important to ensure interventions aimed at reducing professional stress in nurses, especially those who provide palliative nursing care. |
