Abstract (english) While seeking for an answer to the purpose of the human mirror neurons system, scientists have turned to finding the correlates which could be having a common basis in this neural system. The research of imitation had started and today, with certainty, can be said that it correlates to a developed empathy. Besides that, different conditions have been determined in which the probability of imitating increases, such as sharing common characteristics, perceived likeability and the presence of the dominant individual. According to the literature, analogous to a higher tendency to mimic a dominant individual, the person who is being imitated tends to be perceived more dominant, and the imitator more submissive. In addition, men being perceived as a socially dominant sex tend to show a tendency of maintaining their dominance status within and between the two sexes. Due to the necessity to intertwine these findings, the aim of this study was to examine the third party's assessments of dominance and empathy of the initiator and imitator depending on the level of imitation, sex and empathy of the evaluator. The sample consisted of 115 participants, 86 women and 29 men aging from 18 to 40 years. The participants watched 3 videos of initiator and imitator with different levels of imitation – ignoring, partial and full imitation. For every video they estimated dominance and empathy of the models, and filled a questionnaire for their own assessment of empathy. The results indicate a trend of perceiving the imitator more submissive with the increase of imitation of the initiator, while being the most dominant when not engaging in the imitation. For the initiator of the actions there is a trend of a higher dominance with the increase of the imitation. Considering the sex variable, men are generally more prone to lower assessments of dominance than women. The estimations of the imitator's empathy are higher while fully engaging in the imitation than ignoring the initiator, and are connected specifically to the cognitive aspect of evaluator's empathy within the partial imitation. The given results are discussed within the interactional context of the biological, social and evolutionary fields of psychology.
