Abstract
Among Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft is one the most popular horror writers today. His brand of “cosmic horror” influenced many different artists, writers and directors. This paper is interested in exploring the representation of lovecraftian horror in movies and videogames. By referencing Lovecraft’s works it is possible to construct an image of what “lovecraftian” means. It is also important to distinguish the mediums of film and videogames in order to better understand how... More they adapt Lovecraft’s ideas. Three movies and three games were chosen for comparison and analysis. The games mentioned are Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Skyrim and Bloodborne. Each one of them offer a different take on lovecraftian horror. The same thing was done for the movies The Thing, Alien and In the Mouth of Madness. The main goal of this paper was to define the elements of lovecraftian horror; madness, eldritch beings, and the existential dread, to see how these ideas can be presented through different aspects of cinematography, narrative and gameplay. Uz Stephen Kinga i Edgar Allan Poea, H.P. Lovecraft je jedan od najpopularnijih horor pisaca danas. Njegov brend "kozmičkog horora" utjecao je na mnoge različite umjetnike, pisce i redatelje. Ovaj rad je zainteresiran za istraživanje zastupljenosti lovecraftovskog horora u filmovima i videoigrama. Referenciranjem na Lovecraftova djela moguće je konstruirati sliku o tome što "lovecraftovski" znači. Također je važno razlikovati medije filma i videoigara kako bismo bolje razumjeli kako... More prilagođavaju Lovecraftove ideje. Za usporedbu i analizu odabrana su tri filma i tri igre. Spomenute igre su Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Skyrim i Bloodborne. Svaki od njih nudi drugačiji pogled na lovecraftovski horor. Ista stvar učinjena je i za filmove The Thing, Alien i In the Mouth of Madness. Glavni cilj ovog rada bio je definirati elemente lovecraftovskog horora; ludilo, čudna bića i egzistencijalni strah, kako bismo vidjeli kako se te ideje mogu predstaviti kroz različite aspekte kinematografije, naracije i igranja.
