Time je ujedno stvarnost pretvorio u fikciju.
Abstract (english) Gerhart Hauptmann is a famous German writer who lived from 1862 to 1946. With his dramas he had a big influence on the epoch of Naturalism and got the Nobel prize for his life achievement. The main thing in this assignment is the picture of women in his works Atlantis (1912) and Buch der Leidenschaft (1929). In both novels the protagonists are leaving wives, who are described as depressed and broken inside. Then the protagonists find their happiness in a lover. Before that, they still have to face obstacles, pain, sorrow. There are two kinds of lovers. On the one hand there is the devilish "femme fragile" and on the other hand there is the devoted, smart and strong woman who is very down to earth. The different types of women represent the conflict between the bourgeoisie and art, in which centre Hauptmann is situated. Partly, the woman is represented as selfish, full of blame and weak. On the other hand she is noble, strong and the victim of the society and fate. There isn't shown a general image of a woman, although the negative tendency to it can be seen. The man is in a much better position compared to the woman.
It is obvious that these novels are based on true circumstances. These autobiographical novels are, more than any drama, Hartmann's life confession. Writing this artwork took a load off his mind, which had been there for a very long time. He so turned reality into fiction.
