La trilogia I nostri antenati rappresenta una svolta importante nella carriera di Italo Calvino. Si allontana dalla poetica del Neorealismo ma non rifiuta l’idea di un impegno sociale, culturale e politico. Adotta il modo fantastico per interpretare la condizione dell’uomo contemporaneo e per confrontarsi con il caos e il disordine della vita. Per creare delle realtà diverse l’autore fa uso della figuratività e potenzialità creative del linguaggio creando immagini fantastiche che celano insegnamento morale ed esistenziale. Lo scopo di questa tesi è di mostrare come si manifesta il fantastico e qual è il suo ruolo nei tre romanzi di Italo Calvino che formano la sua trilogia I nostri antenati: Il visconte dimezzato (1952), Il barone rampante (1957) e Il cavaliere inesistente (1959). Nell’analisi si pone attenzione all’uso intellettuale del fantastico e due procedimenti formali che spiccano nel suo modo fantastico: figuratività e potenzialità creative del linguaggio. Dopo una breve biografia dello scrittore ci si concentra sulla definizione del fantastico come genere e modo letterario e sui dibattiti teorico-critici. Vengono presentate le riflessioni di Italo Calvino sulla letteratura fantastica, le sue nozioni di fantastico e vengono individualizzati due procedimenti formali usati nel suo modo fantastico. In seguito, viene presentato il contesto storico-culturale, la breve biografia intellettuale e artistica dello scrittore e si analizzano i tre romanzi con l’accento sul ruolo del fantastico e procedimenti formali usati dallo scrittore.

The trilogy Our ancestors represents an important turning point in the career of Italo Calvino. He moves away from the poetics of Italian neorealism but does not reject the idea of a social, cultural, and political commitment. He adopts the fantastic mode to interpret the condition of the contemporary man and to confront the chaos and disorder of life. In order to create different realities, the author makes use of imagery and creative potential of language constructing fantastic images that conceal moral and existential messages. The aim of this paper is to show how fantastic is manifested and what its role is in the three novels of Italo Calvino that form his trilogy Our ancestors: The Cloven Viscount (1952), The Baron in the Trees (1957), and The Nonexistent Knight (1959). The focus in the analysis is on the intellectual use of the fantastic and two devices that are prominent in his fantastic mode: imagery and creative use of language. Following a short biography of the author, the paper focuses on the definition of the fantastic as a literary genre and a mode and on theoretical and critical debates. In addition, the paper presents Calvino’s reflections on fantastic literature, his own notions of the fantastic and defines two prominent devices used in his fantastic mode. After an overview of the historical and cultural context and an intellectual and artistic biography of the writer, the three novels are analyzed focusing on the role of the fantastic in the novels and devices the author uses.
