This thesis deals with attitudes of the native speakers of Croatian language, inhabitants of the Republic of Croatia, towards the standard Croatian language. First chapter defines these attitudes and gives an overview of the research on attitudes towards the Croatian language. Second chapter offers a short inspection of the history of Croatian language as well as the language policy in the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century in the Republic of Croatia, along with language policy of the European Union and some European countries, to ensure further understanding and analysis of the speakers’ attitudes. The thesis’ centerpiece describes and demonstrates the research conducted on these attitudes as well as the research’s results. The attitudes were examined by the means of a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained twentyone statements as well as two questions which required answers on orthography, applied, and consolidated standard; alongside with a question which required the examinees to evaluate their knowledge of the Croatian language on a scale from 1 to 5. The statements appertained to the importance of standard language, language preservation, language legislation, orthography, linguistic purism, and the symbolic value of language as an important component of the national identity. Research results confirmed a positive attitude towards the Croatian standard language and a high degree of awareness on the necessity of standard language as well as the importance of language when it comes to Croatian national identity. A smaller number of examinees support the idea of the adoption of language legislation. The examinees demonstrate discontent with the possibility of an increased amount of orthography in use. The examinees’ attitudes mostly diverge on the issue of linguistic purism. The majority of examinees evaluated their knowledge of the Croatian standard language using the grades “very good” and “excellent”.
