Abstract (english) Perfectionism has been recognized in numerous recent studies as a vulnerability factor for the development of different mental disorders. In line with the above and the fact that there are ambiguous findings in this area, the aim of this study was to examine whether there are differences in self-esteem and depression among adaptive perfectionists, maladaptive perfectionists and nonperfectionists. Adaptive perfectionists are individuals who set very high but realistically achievable goals, enjoy success, but do not assess their own value in terms of success or failure. On the other hand, maladaptive perfectionists are individuals who set extremely high, often realistically unattainable goals, do not enjoy success when they achieve it, and are very self-critical if they make mistakes. Finally, nonperfectionists are individuals who score low on both the adaptive and maladaptive dimensions of perfectionism. The research started with the assumption that a group of adaptive perfectionists will have higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of depression compared to maladaptive perfectionists and nonperfectionists. It was also expected that nonperfectionists will have a higher level of self-esteem and a lower level of depression compared to maladaptive perfectionists. The research was conducted on a convenience sample of 266 students from different universities in Croatia. The instruments used to collect the data were: Demographic data questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES; Rosenberg, 1965), Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (PNPS; Terry-Short et al., 1995) and the depression subscale from Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21; Lovibond and Lovibond, 1995). The results showed that adaptive perfectionists had a significantly higher level of self-esteem compared to maladaptive perfectionists and nonperfectionists. Also, results indicated that nonperfectionists had a significantly higher level of self-esteem compared to maladaptive perfectionists. Furthermore, it was found that maladaptive perfectionists had a significantly higher level of depression compared to adaptive perfectionists and nonperfectionists, while no significant difference in depression was found between adaptive perfectionists and nonperfectionists.
