Abstract
Rock music was pièce de résistance of the countercultural movement of the Sixties. Covering a wide array of social issues that would otherwise be ignored by authorities, it helped British and American youth to express their dissatisfaction with social norms. Accordingly, this thesis aims to determine the ideological relationship between rock music and counterculture, by examining the morals of rock and the values of counterculture in lyrics and live performances of rock musicians and the audience’s response to their music. Rock and counterculture were studied within the framework of Gramsci’s theory of cultural ideology. The analysis focused on finding recurring behavioural patterns that appear at rock concerts in order to prove the existence of anti-cultural values, and to determine exactly what those values are. Consequently, the analysis of lyrics and recordings of live events found on YouTube revealed that rock music and counterculture share almost the same, if not the same, powerful set of beliefs, ideas, and values.
Abstract (croatian)
Rock glazba bila je važan dio otpora kontrakulturnog pokreta šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća. Pokrivajući širok raspon društvenih pitanja koja bi inače bila zanemarena od strane vlasti, rock glazba pomogla je britanskoj i američkoj omladini da izraze nezadovoljstvo prema društvenim normama. U skladu s tim, cilj ovog rada utvrditi je ideološki odnos između rock glazbe i kontrakulture, i to na način da se ispitaju etička načela rocka i vrijednosti kontrakulture u tekstovima pjesama i live nastupima rock glazbenika i odgovoru publike na njihovu glazbu. Rock glazba i kontrakultura proučavali su se u okviru Gramscijeve teorije kulturne ideologije. Analiza se usredotočila na pronalaženje ponavljajućih obrazaca ponašanja koji se pojavljuju na rock koncertima kako bi se dokazalo postojanje protukulturnih vrijednosti, te utvrdilo koje su to točno vrijednosti. Slijedom toga, analiza tekstova pjesama i snimaka live nastupa pronađenih na YouTube-u otkrila je da rock glazba i kontrakultura dijele gotovo isti, ako ne i isti, skup snažnih uvjerenja, ideja i vrijednosti.
