Abstract
The aim of this final paper was to analyse contemporary Irish society as presented by Dermot Bolger in the novels The Journey Home (1990) and Emily's Shoes (1992). The selected novels are analysed within the context of the representation of national and religious identity which is rapidly changing in Irish urban centers in the second half of twentieth century. This final paper focuses on personal, cultural and social reasons for the crisis of identity as well as the declining influence of the Catholic Church and weaker connections between Irish national and religious (Catholic) identity. It also tries to demonstrate how Bolger perceives the creation of contemporary Ireland and social, cultural and political changes focusing on young urban protagonists and their role in Irish society. Also, this final paper aims to show Bolger’s novels as portraits of complex and multi-layered contemporary Irish society and deep changes in that same society that affect individuals and their relationships.
Abstract (croatian)
Cilj ovog završnog rada je analizirati suvremeno irsko društvo kako ga prikazuje autor Dermot Bolger u romanima The Journey Home (1990.) i Emily's Shoes (1992.). Odabrani romani iščitavaju se i analiziraju u kontekstu prikaza nacionalnog i vjerskog identiteta koji se u irskim urbanim sredinama ubrzano mijenja u drugoj polovici 20. st. Ovaj se završni rad fokusira na osobne, kulturne i društvene razloge krize identiteta kao i na sve slabiji utjecaj Katoličke crkve i sve slabiju vezu između irskog nacionalnog i religijskog (katoličkog) identiteta. Rad nastoji pokazati kako se Bolger u svojim tekstovima odnosi prema stvaranju suvremene Irske i društvenih, kulturnih i političkih promjena posebno kroz temu položaja mladih u društvu. Ovaj rad pokušava prikazati Bolgerove romane kao portret kompleksnog i slojevitog suvremenog irskog društva i duboke promjene u tom istom društvu koje utječu na pojedince i njihove veze.
