Abstract (english) The European migration crisis has been a witness to the largest movement of displaced persons since World War II. In situations like these, the public heavily rely on the information dispersed by the mass media, so as to be aware of the rapidly changing circumstances that surround them. Journalists act as our eyes and ears during these times, and in turn have the obligation to report with truthful, time appropriate and complete information in accordance with the ethical standards their profession requires them to comply with. This is not always the case, as we find frequent displays of sensationalism, speculation and deviation in mass communication via media channels distributed to the masses, in order to intensify viewership or readership and thereupon increase profit margins. The credibility of such information is consequently then brought into question, which deliberates the notion of media accuracy in its dissemination of information.
This paper, both in its theoretical and analytical segments gave insight into such observations. Examining numerous news publications over a two-month period, both daily and weekly, in relation to the migration state of affairs led to the discovery that, albeit, this crisis was increasingly covered as time went on, there was not sufficient coverage on the same topic prior to such happenings. Informing and educating the public in regards to such matters is imperative to facilitate resolutions and decrease the possibility of mass panic. As the timing of the mass migration movement corresponded with the election campaigns for the oncoming Croatian parliamentary election, the correlation of media coverage in regards to the migration issue and political viewpoints were also explored. The case study allowed insight into the fact that political bias was insignificantly represented in media coverage and therefore was not utilised as a tool to gain validation from the general public.
