Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children. It manifests with typical symptoms of coughing, wheezing, dispnea and a feeling of chest tightness. According to some data there are 339 millions of people who have asthma around the world. Due to its symptoms which occur often and a difficult establishment of the diagnosis it demands a special monitoring of the symptoms and care from the patient and his family. Although many aspects of the disease are still unknown, as a multifactorial etiology of the disease, it is also considered that the impact of the environmental factors on children with predisposition for asthma can contribute to the occurrence of this disease. Cigarette smoke or frequent viral infections in the first years of life could be the first triggers of the symptoms and cause an increase of the risk for the development of the disease. Healing from asthma is possible with the use of adequate medications which is endeavored to easing the symptoms and reducing the “burden of the disease”. Also, it is of utmost importance an active cooperation of the patient in the treatment, which can be made difficult when it comes to children. A nurse with its interventions tries to contribute to a successful outcome of the treatment. Administration of the medications, explanations about the importance of using the medications regularly and a successful communication with the patient and his family are a part of her everyday work and efforts. During the treatment mental health must not be neglected. A stay in the hospital and the use of medical equipment can be stressful for the child. Offering support when its needed, having conversations or additional teaching can be adequate nursing interventions.
