According to the Nature Protection Act, protected areas are divided into nine categories. The nine categories include nature reserve, national park, special reserve, nature park, regional park, natural monument, important landscape, forest park and park architecture monument. According to the Register of Protected Areas from the Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection in the Republic of Croatia, there are 420 protected areas in total, of which 17 are in Zadar County. In the area of Zadar County, there is National Park Paklenica. Special reserves are Kolanjsko Blato – Blato Rogoza (island of Pag), Veliko i Malo Blato (island of Pag), Dubrava – Hanzine (island of Pag) and Olive Grove Saljsko Polje (Long Island). Nature parks in this county are Lake Vrana, Telascica and Velebit (smaller part). Natural monuments are Modrič Cave (Rovanjska), Vrelo Une (Donja Suvaja) and Zeleni Hrast (Islam Latinski). Important landscapes are Zrmanja Canyon, northwest part of Long Island – Saharun, Dubrava-Hanzine and island of Osljak. There are two park architecture monuments: Vladimir Nazor Park and Folco Borelli Park. In this area there are no nature reserves, regional parks and forest parks. In Zadar County there are 100 areas of the ecological network Natura 2000. Those areas also include parts important for the conservation of migratory bird specie, especially wetland areas of international importance. Ecological network Natura 2000 is the largest system of conserved areas in the world. The goal of this network is not to stop development activities, but it supports the principle of sustainable development, while at the same time trying to preserve biodiversity.
